Fplus Never
The Artwork of Josh Pearce
A closer look at the Worlds Collide posse
February 11th, 2011
My major motivation to curate the upcoming “When Worlds Collide” show was the chance to work with some of my favorite fellow custom artists. I knew going into the show that I not only wanted an eclectic blend of styles for the show, but also to pick out real stand out artists that are pushing the boundaries of vinyl and their own unique style. These are all names that will be at the forefront of the future of the scene as we know it.
So it thought I’d do a quick little personal breakdown on why I picked each artist. So, in no particular order, here’s the gang:

DrilOne: World of Rust
This guy has been in the game for a long time. Many people know him as a faux rust finish guy, which he does to perfection. Most his pieces look so military grade that you’d think they were made of lead and not vinyl. But the real reason I asked Dril to join was because of the amazing ways he tweaks platforms in combination with his technique, turning something into an all together different concept. Dril has done a ton of stuff and has a huge portfolio to back it up. All I can say is, often imitated, never duplicated, DrilOne has a timeless style that is here to stay.

Kevin Gosselin: World of Epic Fantasy
Just north of me, in a land that rains even more than it does in Portland, dwells Kevin Gosselin. Kevin’s work really speaks for itself, but If I had to describe it, I’d say that this guy has more sculpting chops in his little finger than most any other custom artist has in their entire body. He’s grilled me for trade secrets on more than one occasion, although, I don’t know if I’ve ever taught him anything, considering his work is so damn detailed and polished already. A word of warning, if Kevin work keeps progressing at this rate, he will be an unstoppable sculpting machine that will destroy us all.

MAp MAp: World of a million playful creatures
Over in the UK, there’s a few custom artists that come to mind, but when it comes to style and an all together unique approach to vinyl, there are few that compare to the imagination of MAp MAp. His creatures are uniquely patterned, perfectly colored and all together brilliant works. Every time I see his stuff i can’t help but smile in childish glee at how he takes any platform, and mutates it into an original creature that has all the spirit of the original sculpt, but a whimsical personality all it’s own.

ZAM: world of tattoos
looking at ZAM’s work from a technical perspective, ZAM has got be one of the best airbrush custom artists out there. A tattoo artist as well, one could say most of his stuff looks like flawlessly executed flash art, but to say that would only be skimming the surface. ZAM not only brings that incredibly clean “flash” style to his pieces, but he also brings a ton of dimension and depth to his designs that really makes them pop out and have a presence that says “ZAM made me, now I’m alive, and here to blow your mind”

Nerviswr3k: World of cyborg monsters
When I think of aliens that will some day enslave us all, I think of Nerviswr3k’s work. My boy from back when I lived in AZ, Nervis’ monsters have incredibly detailed skin, all cracked and weathered. Gaping maws paired with vacant eyes, and circuitry that suggests they may be smarter than the savages they often appear to be. i’ve watched Nervis’ work progress a lot over the past few years, and it just keeps getting better.

Walter “Chauskoskis”: The world of fit and finish
Hailing from Mexico, Walter’s work is immediately recognizable by his signature, (somehow nostalgic?) style and the best way I can describe it is unprecedentedly clean. Seriously, this guys stuff is creative, original and absolutely perfect. I don’t even want to know how much time he spends sanding down some of these figures. every piece Walter makes looks like a production piece, so it’s no surprsie he was called on to do the “greasebat” and head up several other original sculpts.

and then there’s me, and although I love to talk about myself, I don’t think I can muster up the same introspective review as I did for the others.
Just a couple weeks till the show. Brace yourselves for the collision!!!
